Chapter Fifteen
âThank God,â Deirdre whispered when she saw Moirra soaked with sweat. âThe fever breaks.â
Thomas was standing in the doorway to his chamber and, as always, his face bore his all-too-familiar scowl. âGood,â he said. âPut her in the barn so I can have me bloody bed back.â
If he wasnât Deirdreâs brother she might hate him more than she did. As she dipped a cloth into the basin, she glanced up. âIâd ask if ye have a heart but I already ken the answer.â
Thomas was not fazed in the least by her insult. âI want me bed back.â
âYeâll get it back when Moirra is better,â she told him as she wiped Moirraâs brow.
âAnd when will that be?â
Deirdre hadnât slept for more than a few hours at a time in days, had rarely left Moirraâs side; therefore, her patience was as thin as a spider web. âMe thinks ye need to visit the brothel in Glenkirby, fer yer behavinâ like a bastard right now.â If anyone on Godâs earth needed a woman, âtwas Thomas. However, Deirdre couldnât think of anyone strong enough to put up with him, kind enough to bring back the sweet boy he had once been, and no one she disliked enough to put the task to. âTwas a conundrum.
âI want me bed back,â he repeated, a little harsher than before.
Deirdre was glad Moirra was sleeping so she wouldnât be subjected to Thomasâ cold heart. She continued to wash Moirraâs face and hands, pretending she hadnât heard her brother.
âTake her back to her own home,â he said.
Deirdre rolled her eyes and shook her head in disgust. âWhat home would that be? The one that was practically destroyed by fire?â
He shrugged his shoulders. âI didna start the fire,â he said. âAnd she be noâ my responsibility, remember?â
Exasperated, Deirdre glared at him. ââTis a good thing our mum did noâ live to know the man yeâve become. âTwould have broken her heart to see ye so cold and heartless.â
âYe can thank Moirra Dundotter fer that,â Thomas spat out. âShe destroyed me when she refused to marry me.â
Deirdre had reached the ends of her patience. Shooting to her feet, she tossed the cloth into the basin and stomped toward him. âMoirra did noâ do that to ye, our father did! Now get out of here before I take a sgian dubh to ye!â With that, she pushed him out of the room, slammed the door shut and barred it.
âThere be some comfort in knowinâ he has noâ changed whilst I was ill,â Moirra whispered in a scratchy voice.
Deirdre felt her face grow hot with embarrassment. Quickly, she went to sit beside Moirra and placed the back of her hand on her forehead. âI think yer fever has finally broken,â she said, hoping to avoid the topic of Thomas altogether.
Moirra closed her eyes and nodded slightly. âI never meant to hurt Thomas.â
Deirdreâs heart tightened in her chest. âMoirra, ye need noâ worry about it. âTwasnât ye who turned Thomas into the angry wretch he has become.
